Dark Dawn Fonts
« on: January 03, 2012, 01:53:18 pm »
So I've been all over the interwebs trying to figure out what the font is for Dark Dawn.  Yes, I even googled it. >_>  While I did find the font for the title (Valhalla, it seems), I'm more interested in the in-game text that appear when people talk and in the glossary.  I've tried a few things - What the Font failed spectacularly, and I've not gotten any replies at all in the few font forums I've asked about it in... so I was hoping that you guys might know what font it is, or if not, what font is close enough to pass as it?

no idea on what it is or where to get it.

you might just have to take screenshots of each character and make your own font

So I googled quickly and I found someone asking the same thing and he/she got the answer that this sites font or something looks about the same. I'm not sure, judge for yourself.

http://www.goldensun-zone.de/

Kinda?

So I ctrl+c'd it into Word and apparently it's the Georgia font.

Also, found some sprites and stuff on the same site if you're still interested: http://www.goldensun-zone.de/index.php?site=sonstiges/downloads

Oh, well look at that same link.

It's german so I can understand a little but here's Google Translate:

"fonts

You want to finally write the original script of Golden Sun (or at least similar), or something similar verziehrung images? Here you can finally download a patch to Golden Sun (-like) fonts. Just right click "save target as" and already you can take it from Control Panel (clean copy), paste it into fonts. So before you know what the fonts before you downloaded it, there are a small sample of each font.

Georgia: The normal font used in the forum and on this page - has little to do with Golden Sun, but it fits and you can read it, if the font is smaller!

Sherwood: Quite similar font, looks good, fits well and you can read it when it is written larger.

Viking: A very real-looking Golden Sun magazine. Unfortunately, only readable when it is very large.

Valhalla: The best and echtaussehendste (eh) Golden Sun font that fit in different sizes!

Alot of other cool stuff there.

I did the same thing.  Just one problem, georgia ain't it.  It's got a very distinctive G and y, and when I try to use Georgia, I don't get that - when I type as small as the font face in the actual game, it's all clumpy and hard to read.  As I already said, I've googled it, and that's where I found Vahalla.  But that doesn't answer my question at all.  What really kills Georgia is the fact that it's a serif font - I need a sans serif font.

I have no idea if it really is a specific font to tell you the truth. I'll gladly try to help find one or more that could possibly pass or lead you on to new sites but not sure if theres more to be found.

Found this old thread though:

Not much but it's something.

Eh, that's pre-dark dawn... meaning it's the TLA font.  If I want that, I can just ask Atrius for it - his editor uses it.  The thing is, I need this for my signature, which I'm trying to make Dark Dawn themed... so I want the text to be as close as possible.

Good luck with that. From what I understand through both of our Google adventures there is none of the deepest and most mysterious Golden Sun or Font fansites who got an answer. So I really doubt you'll get anything closer then Georgia, Sherwood, Viking or Valhalla. At all.

Maybe it's possible to contact Camelot?

Found no mail but...

Camelot would use a totally different font, since they need it in Japanese.  Do you have the contact info for the Region 1 Localization team?  Because that's who I'd need to talk to.

That might be a harder one.

Look at this one

Not sure if "NOA Localization Management" is right? Then you need to contact Nintendo of America and ask for Dark Dawn.

Yeah... no dice.  Finally got the reply, and basically it was a generic "We get too many requests to ask questions, so we really can't forward you to the localization team.  Sorry."

Do you know of any sites that have a well done tutorial on how to custom-make fonts? =_=
